JOINT MEDIA RELEASE
The Albanese Labor Government is ensuring Melton and Bacchus Marsh can continue to attract doctors.
Melton and Bacchus Marsh have seen a rapid population increase of 14 per cent in the last four years. At the same time, access to GPs in the area has decreased.
During their decade in Government, the former Liberal Government made it harder and more expensive to see a doctor by cutting Medicare.
That’s why, following a recent review, the Albanese Labor Government has granted Distribution Priority Area (DPA) status to the GP catchment of Melton and Bacchus Marsh.
By granting DPA status, local practices can now recruit overseas trained doctors, meaning people living in this region will have better, more regular access to GP care without needing to travel long distances to get the care they need.
Making sure all Australians have access to quality, safe and affordable primary healthcare is a priority of the Albanese Labor Government.

Minister Butler said “there is no higher priority in health for the Albanese Government than strengthening Medicare and rebuilding general practice.
“This DPA status will help address workforce shortages in Bacchus Marsh and Melton.
“We remain committed to investing in general practice and improving primary healthcare for all Australians no matter where they live.”
Federal Member for Hawke, Sam Rae said “our community is rapidly growing, and we need our health system to grow with us.”
“The decision to grant the Melton and Bacchus Marsh area DPA status will bring more GPs into our community and ensure locals can get the care they need, when they need it.”
